On the southern coast, protected from the full force of the Atlantic trade winds, Old Bacolet was one of the first areas to be cultivated by the French. A flat flood plain between two small rivers, these alluvial soils –Plains Clay Loam and Woburn Clay – and a high water table produce lush cane. For this rum we harvested the quick-growing variety we call Cain from Josh’s field, which stands on the terroir known as Riverside.
At Old Bacolet farm an extensive vista of cane made up of multiple varieties thrives across almost 25 acres. The land – close to the coast, but far enough inland that the soil is rich and moist – has been farmed since the 1800s. Indeed sporadic coconut, papaya, mango and other trees in and around the fields still showcase the land’s fertile value. The river that flows through Old Bacolet brings a cooling breeze on the way to the sea.
B77 602 - nicknamed Cain - germinates well and grows quickly giving it a natural competitive edge. The shoots have a yellow – green complexion and are topped by a thick and large canopy. The lush canopy increases photosynthesis helping the plants to grow and mature faster. This variety was grown in Grenada on a small scale previously. Cain prefers sandy, shallow soils and performs well on expansive, flat and generally wettish fields.
Old Bacolet at sunset. Farmers from the surrounding area are on the farm collecting vines and bagasse from the sides of the fields, and loading it into their truck. Evening is peacefully settling over the farm – it’s not long until crickets will start their nightly concert.

Appearance: Clear, water-white colourless rum.
Nose: Clean, mellow hints of caramel and vanilla.
Palate: The rum has a robust spicy, cinnamon to allspice flavor, but with very soft undertones of a sweet roasted nuttiness that complements the spiciness creating a pleasant, dry, long-lasting finish.
