A vast coastal farm, Hope faces the Atlantic ocean on the eastern side of the isle. Merely steps away from the beach, facing serene sunrises, the terrain quickly becomes hilly and rough. The fields of the farm were once the source of a thriving agricultural estate that grew coconuts, bananas, limes, and cocoa. The farm is home to varying soil-types, each of which nourish the crops well, and an abundance of terroirs.
Two rivers run through the farm and flow through to the sea. The bright red clay adds vibrancy to the farms. Lower fields lead towards a swamp, which may have contributed to the rare growth of rice on the same land back over a decade prior. All six varieties of cane grow on the farm and the fields, each with their own characteristics, enjoy the coolness of the ocean breeze.
B77 602 - nicknamed Cain - germinates well and grows quickly giving it a natural competitive edge. The shoots have a yellow – green complexion and are topped by a thick and large canopy. The lush canopy increases photosynthesis helping the plants to grow and mature faster. This variety was grown in Grenada on a small scale previously. Cain prefers sandy, shallow soils and performs well on expansive, flat and generally wettish fields.
Heavy breeze blows through the cane, creating a rhythmical sound. The large farms’ sounds alter from one end to the next. A weed eater hums loudly as a farmer cuts the grass at the north. Some cattle graze near the eastern tip of the farm bordering the beach, where playing children laugh and waves crash upon the shore.
